4th IABR at IDFA / IDFA at 4th IABR

The 22nd edition of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam takes place from 19 through 29 November 2009.

On Friday 20 November, the thematical IDFA program Open City will be officially opened. The program connects to the theme of the 4th IABR Open City: Designing Coexistence and consists of a film program at the IDFA in Amsterdam as well as a film program at the main location of the 4th IABR, the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI).
The program opens with the documentary Garbage Dreams. A film about the Zabbaleen people who have collected and processed Cairo's garbage for generations, but they are now facing competition from professional trash collectors.
Al Gore about Garbage Dreams: "Garbage Dreams makes a compelling case that modernization does not always equal progress." The director Mai Iskander will be present at this premiere.


Until 21 December 2009, every Wednesday and Sunday at the NAI, a documentary is screened. IDFA at the 4th IABR is part of the Open City Event Program, organized by the IABR and the NAI for twelve consecutive weeks, with focus on different themes each week, for example "Refuge" and "Squat." The documentaries shown at the 4th IABR focus on the respective themes.
